I have all these days
Been hard and simple upon you
Because I want to make a dwelling in you.
All I’ve thought
Or shown you,
Is not to make out of you
A great author of many books,
Or great Composer of many songs.
Prince among many preachers’ or
Genius among the saints.
Apostle among the saints, or
Evangelist with many gifts,
I intentionally followed you till this end
To build for myself
A sanctuary in you
That I may dwell in.
A tabernacle
Where my name may be found.
A house, convenient and comfortable
That all of me may dwell
I’d worked consistently
To break and put upon you
Stones of precious quality
To build for myself
A pattern of heavenly sanctuary.
I want to dwell among my people
That’s why
I’ve been simple and hard
On you and your ways
