I was with a team in New York. I really didn’t know the exact why’s and what’s about our assignment. That usually becomes clearer as we go and also as I reflect. I had some idea of the significance of the task, but there I was holding the corner of a purple flag with a crown with another gal. We were the first two in this line of about twelve people. A few of the guys had shofars, and some on the team had a jars of oil in their hands, and others had salt shakers.

We were walking south – I guess. The wind pressed against my face like a board. That scripture about ‘setting your face like flint’ made perfect sense. My face felt like it was stone. It hurt. Then we rounded the corner and the force of the air ceased. The atmosphere changed and it was cheerful and sunny.

Mind you, we were not supposed to interact with anyone. If outsiders asked what we were doing, we were supposed to say: We are doing the Lord’s business.

As we turned that corner, there were several lanes of cars facing our direction. If I remember correctly those cars were under a bridge. I happened to look up and I saw a guy enthusiastically waving his hand to get my attention. His car window was open and he was in the driver’s seat. Sure enough, it looked like Jesus, and so I waved back. Then it struck me that I was not supposed to interact with anyone but God.

It was a perplexing walk as we were now headed north to go to a specific building. It is written that signs and wonders follow them that believe. I actually consider that moment a wonder. I still wonder about it from time to time. Why did God choose to show up at that moment and in a car? He wasn’t the painted Jesus that we see so often. He was bursting with excitement.

That’s my clearest picture of Jesus. A man who is full of life and passion. Others may grasp a different facet of God, but that’s the one I have experienced in real life and on earthly time. He didn’t say a word but He just exuberantly waved. That’s the God I know.
