He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.” Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.” Matthew 13:31-35 NIV

Just as a mustard seed when planted becomes over time a large plant, a tree in which birds can nest, the early church began very small, but, through the ages has become quite large. It is a not just a place, but exists with the gathering of those who come together in the name of the Lord. It is a place to rest in the love and assurances of our God, to share with each other, and from which to go forth sharing the Good News with those we meet in our lives. The object is not increasing the numbers, as it is in making those who do not know aware of the news of Jesus Christ.

The actions, the doings of the church can be compared to a woman using yeast to mix with flour in order to make bread. The making of bread is the coming together of those who belong to God in fellowship, and the work done in the fields to harvest for the Lord, to help in winning souls for the kingdom of God.

Be a part of the growth of the mustard seed, while also being part of the mixture of the yeast and flour. Let the Lord work in and through you for the glory of the kingdom of God.
