“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” Matthew 12:30-32 NIV

What we must first understand in these verses is that Christ tells us there is no neutrality as to one’s relationship with Him. Either one is with Christ, belonging to Him, or else that person is against Christ. There is no fence sitting allowed. If you don’t work with Christ, working for the advancement of the kingdom of God, then you are working against Him.

Why is it that someone can be forgiven for saying a word against the Lord, but, one cannot be forgiven for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? Words spoken against Christ might come from ignorance or due to narrow mindedness. Such a one might have a change of heart. One who speaks against the Holy Spirit speaks against the mighty actions of God. What we do for Christ is done through the indwelling Holy Spirit. God’s kingdom is advanced through the Holy Spirit working through and in us. One who blasphemes the work of God has closed their mind to the truth of God. Their soul is lost. They are doomed to a fate of eternal destruction.

Let us speak to those who might be ignorant or have a narrow mind. For them there is still hope of receiving salvation.
