Where Is Your Home?

Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” Matthew 8:19-22 NIV

There is a cost to following Jesus. When Jesus speaks of foxes having holes, and birds having nests, He is speaking of these animals as having homes. Figuratively speaking humans have homes in their manner of what is important. To be a follower of Christ, one must let go of earthly enticements, which are homes to those of this world. A Christian must be a servant of all, sacrificing of their own needs for the needs of others. So, in this manner a Christian is not at “home” like those of this world.

Those who are spiritually dead adhere to the routines of this earth. We as followers of Christ are not to follow in their steps. One can attend a funereal or visit someone who is terminally ill, but these are not to encompass all of a Christian's time at the expense of ignoring Christ and His work.

There is poverty and homelessness in following Christ. There truly is a cost to following in the Lord’s steps.
