Taken to Court

“Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.” Matthew 5:25-26 NIV

This passage of scripture might seem a bit confusing. What is Jesus teaching us here? Based upon the more previous verses, here I believe Him to be speaking of one’s adversary as someone whom we have wronged. We have sinned against them and need to be reconciled to them. The judge in the above verses would be God. If we have committed sin, and don’t admit to it, and repent and seek reconciliation, then we can expect to be judged, which in the above is shown as being put into prison. Reconciliation, rather than resentment and retaliation is our calling, particularly if we are guilty of sin.

Don’t set yourself up to be judged. Reconcile before you are “taken to court.”
