Fear Not the Shadow

“the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” Matthew 4:16 NIV

These are the words of the prophet Isaiah, spoken about 700 years before the birth of Christ.

Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a world without light? We would certainly die. Those who are without Christ live in a spiritual world of darkness. They truly are spiritually dead. That is why they cannot find satisfaction in life. They yearn for that which they cannot find. To the world of darkness can come the light of Christ. Just as light brings warmth to our body and sight to our eyes, so the light which is Jesus Christ, brings light to our heart and soul. What was a life without meaning now has an ultimate purpose.

How would it feel to know that a shadow always lurks around you, the shadow of death? To know that sometime that shadow will overtake you, and turn into reality, to me seems quite frightening. The light which dawns has the ability to swallow up death. Nothing other than the light that is Christ can swallow up death. Christ however has that power. The one who belongs to Christ need not fear the shadow of death, for death of the body to the believer is the turning point to the passage into the eternal reward prepared for the one who believes.
