But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. Matthew 3:7-8 and 10 NIV

A brood of vipers certainly shall not bear good fruit. John had no trouble in recognizing the Pharisees and Sadducees for who they were, prim and proper on the outside, yet rotten on the inside, spiritually dead.

One must bear good fruit to be a follower of Christ. What is in the heart reveals itself in the words and actions of its owner. Good fruit cannot come from a heart full of envy and hate. It is so true; a tree shall be known by its fruit.

The axe truly is at the root of every tree. We shall all stand before Christ to give an accounting of our life. The fruit we bore shall be present there, before us. If our fruit is good, coming from a heart which belongs to God, we shall be blessed eternally. If our fruit is full of worms, rotten inside, we shall face an eternal punishment, banished from God’s presence forever.

Bear good fruit, belonging to Christ. You shall live in the presence of God forever!
