Until one is ready to confess their sinfulness, there is no reason for them to approach God, as He will be silent to them. It is not until we realize that we were born into sin, are sinful by nature, and desperately need an intercessor to stand before God on our behalf, that we can acknowledge our utter dependence on God’s love, mercy, and grace. To come to Christ, we must be reborn. This process begins with a change of heart. We must repent of our sin. We must humbly approach God, knowing that without Him we are bankrupt. We are lost forever without Him. Being able and willing to confess our sinfulness releases us from the bondage to sin, to its enslavement.
Now Christ, through the indwelling Holy Spirit can work on our heart, mind, and soul. We will need to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As long as we are willing, and obedient, we will be led through the process which brings us living a life for Christ. We have received salvation. We are now a new creation in Christ. Are not you glad you made that initial confession of sinfulness, allowing Christ into your heart? You knew you needed someone, and that someone is Jesus Christ!

Yes, we must first confess our sins when we come to Jesus.
Realizing we are nothing without God, sinners, we are then relieved and are given the treasure of God.
When I worked at a methadone center decades ago as a patient monitor, one of the counselors tried to get me interested in becoming a counselor. After work, he talked with me a showed me counseling materials. One idea in counseling was that you shouldn't make the junkie feel bad about him or her self. The material the counselor showed me knocked the Christian idea that we are basically bad. Because of this and other ideas the counselor presented, I decided not to pursue the counseling job.
Today I see how this philosophy is counterproductive in fighting drug abuse epidemic. Politicians, treatment centers, etc., make the addicts victims and say that drug addiction is a disease. They even have a name for it. I think it is "drug abuse syndrome", or something.
I'm rereading Jay E Adams, the father of the Biblical Counseling movement's book "How to Help People Change." Dr. Adams writes that the counselor and counselee must strictly adhere to the Bible and be guided by the spirit only when he matches scripture. Scripture is the Word of God and the Spirit empowers us, puts it in motion, Dr. Adams wrote. Scripture can cover every life situation, he writes. And that Jesus was the great counselor, and we were doing just fine handling people's problems before Freud!
