Joseph's Obedience

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. Matthew 1:24-25 NIV

So, what does this passage reveal to us about Joseph?

First, he immediately did that which he had been commanded by the angel. He asked for no further evidence. He believed that which he had seen in his dream. Would you have had any doubt if this had been your dream? Joseph trusted God and His word. We should accept that which comes to us from God, just as did Joseph.

Secondly, Joseph did not consummate his marriage to Mary until after the birth of Jesus. We do not know whether or not this had been commanded him by the angel, but, Joseph wanted no doubt in the eyes of man whether or not Jesus was his biological son. What a wonderful commitment to God’s plan on the part of this man.

And, lastly, Joseph named the newborn boy Jesus, just as he had been commanded by the angel. The baby was not named after him, nor any relative. The baby was named as the angel had commanded.

Joseph was an obedient man to God. God chose him to be the man to raise His Son. God’s plan is perfect, and He knew the one He chose to rear His Son was the right man. And so begins the account of God is with us. Are we not truly blessed?

Father knows best!

Good, succinct article about obedience to God and to know that God's plan is perfect. He knows our character, and who will follow Him.
