So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13 NIV

Through Christ, the church has received those deemed to be leaders in guiding it to be that which the Lord intends. These leaders equip those who are in the church to carry out works of service. We must pray for the leaders of the church, that Christ, through the Holy Spirit, will impart to them the wisdom needed to guide those who belong to the church, that effective service for the advancement of God’s kingdom will occur.

The acts of service we do are to build up the body of Christ, not tear it down. The only thing that we must work to tear down is that which is evil. Leaders are to encourage us. They can also help us to effectively utilize gifts we have received for the advancement of God’s kingdom.

We strive for unity in faith. We might not agree on all matters, but there are basic principles to Christianity upon which we should agree. We strive for better understanding of the knowledge of God. Through our actions we strive to become mature Christians. As we become mature we can become mentors for Christians in the infancy stage. As we mature, the traits of our Christianity become more apparent to others. We must remember though, that in being mentors, or leaders, we also must be the servant of all, just as Christ, our Master did.
