They Argued Again

A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. Luke 22:24-27 NIV

How many times had Jesus talked with His disciples about exaltation and humility. And yet, here at the Last Supper, an argument occurs as to which of them is the greatest.

Did you recall in school seeing lists posted with test scores? You would look to see how far down the list your name appeared. Many other events occur in life when we are either intentionally or unintentionally “ranked”. No wonder making oneself humble can be difficult. It just does not fit in with what this world teaches us.

Reflect on all which Jesus did to be a servant of all. Here He is, the King of Kings, the Son of God, sent by the Heavenly Father, and yet He just continued to serve others throughout His life.

Later on at the Last Supper, Jesus would wash the feet of each of the disciples. This certainly would not be an act which a master would do. Yet, Christ wanted to set an example for the disciples about being the servant of all.

In serving Christ, do not seek exaltation. Christ will provide for each of us based upon our words and our actions. Let us just be servants of all, just as our Lord did.
