True Fear of God

“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:4-7 NIV

What comes to your mind when you hear the word fear? Does the word afraid come to mind? I am sure for many it does, when being associated with fear. Jesus is not telling us to be afraid of God. Why would one be afraid of their loving creator, the one who provides a perfect plan for the salvation of the lost soul? Christ is telling us that we should revere God and be in awe of Him. This goes hand in hand with loving God with all one’s mind, heart, and soul.

We do not need to be fearful of one who can destroy the body and do nothing afterward. The soul lives forever. God alone can cast the soul of the unbeliever into hell. Yet, God does not want us to be afraid of Him. He loves us with an unconditional love. He wants us to come to Him, giving all that we are over to Him. He wants to direct our lives. He wants us to be with Him eternally. We each have the choice to make. And, it is an eternal choice.
