The Greatest in God's Kingdom

An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.” Luke 9:46-48 NIV

The better than concept is human nature. We compare ourselves to others and attempt to rank ourselves among a group of people. Jesus does not want us to spend time comparing ourselves to others. We are all uniquely created by our God. We all have been endowed with particular gifts given to us, which are meant to be used for the glory of God.

If we focus on ourselves and our greatness or lack thereof, then we cannot really focus on advancing the kingdom of God. Do you really wish to exalt yourself? If you do be ready for the consequences, for you shall be humbled.

I wonder after Christ told the disciples that to be the greatest one must be the least, if they then continued their argument? I highly doubt it.

Jesus wants and needs us to focus on Him, and not ourselves. There is so much work to be done for the advancement of God’s kingdom, and the workers are few. So, let us stop worrying about who is the greatest….we already know the answer to that…God is the greatest!!
