“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!” John 12:27-28a NIV

I believe we often tend to forget about the humanity of Jesus. We often are caught up in our troubles and concerns. Our souls are troubled by unforeseen events in our lives which bring trouble to us. In today’s passage our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God tells us that His soul is troubled. What, the Son of God had a troubled soul? Yes, His soul was troubled. He knew why He came to this earth, and He knew of His impending death. His soul was troubled as He knew of all the lost souls, souls which needed salvation. He knew there were many who would never accept Him, and would thus face an eternal fate banished from the site of God. What torment that must have, and still continues to bring to His soul. The Father and the Son do not wish that any should be lost. Yet, we are given free will. The next time your soul is troubled with the trials of your life, reflect on the fact that the Son of God had a troubled soul.

Jesus did not ask the Father to take away His troubled soul. He knew why He came into the world. What He sought was to do the will of His Father. He knew this was the only way the perfect plan of the Heavenly Father could be accomplished. Jesus was determined that His Father’s will would be accomplished. The fate of all of mankind was at stake. The eternity of the souls of all mankind hung in the balance.

Jesus did all that the Father asked of Him. The final words of this passage tell us that Jesus sought the glory of His Father. Jesus did not seek for Himself. He sought glory for His Father and salvation for all mankind. There never has nor ever will be one who is more humble and self-sacrificing than our Lord, Jesus Christ. May we strive to humble ourselves, just as the Son of God was humble. Let us preach to all mankind the Good News!
