Are We Blind Too?

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.” John 9:40-41 NIV

There are different degrees of physical blindness. One can be totally blind, legally blind, be far or near sighted. I know about this degree of physical blindness first-hand. Sometime, put a patch over one of your eyes for one day and function with it on. You will get an idea of what physical blindness is like.

There is a different kind of blindness, spiritual blindness. This is what our Lord speaks about in this passage. Spiritual blindness is much more dangerous and costly to an individual that physical blindness. God is spirit, and those who seek Him must seek Him in spirit and truth, as told to us by the Lord. One who is spiritually blind cannot be in harmony with God. Only when one’s eyes are truly opened can the individual see God in spirit. How can one’s eyes be opened spiritually? This can only be done for someone by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For this to happen, one must have a heart that is open to receive the Lord. God does not force Himself upon us. We must choose to accept the free gift of salvation and eternal life offered to us. There is a cost though, although it is not monetary. We must be willing to give ourselves totally to the Lord. We must allow Him to sit on the throne at the center of our heart, mind, and soul. Only then can our spiritual blindness be taken away. We will then be truly alive, a new creation in God.

We must read God’s word every day and remain united to our Lord in order that spiritual blindness may not creep back into our lives. We must do as we are led by the Lord. We can help advance God’s kingdom, and the light of Christ, who is the light of the world, will shine in and through us, that spiritual blindness may be gone from us forever.

I pray that we may all allow the Lord to remove any and all spiritual blindness from us, that we may be in communion with the Father and the Son. May we always be attentive to the word and deeds of our Lord. Let us follow the narrow path on which He leads us, and tell all the world about the Good News of our Lord! AMEN!!
