Gossip

Gossip. Isn’t it the best way to bring revival to a church? It isn’t? Then why do we find ourselves at times gossiping? Gossip is a curse upon the church. Satan knows that he doesn’t have to do much as long as fellow brother and sisters in Christ destroy each other. So in essence gossip makes the devils work much easier.

In Proverbs 16:8 says ‘A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends.’ So gossip separates close friends or families. This tells us that when we are separated, we are not in unity. Not being in unity cause confusion. It also keeps the Lord from blessing.

In Proverbs 18:8 it says ‘The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts.’Hurt feelings in church is deadly. It like choice morsels goes into a person’s inner soul and destroys him or her. Unless you never been a victim of gossip you will never quite understand how much it hurts. How much it can make a once vibrant child of God give up. Even though God didn’t hurt them, God’s so-called people did. We shouldn’t trust in man, but when a friend hurts you it doesn’t go away to easy.

In Proverbs 26:20 it says ‘Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down.’ So if you are one gossiping remember that words do hurt people. We are to be a family not enemies. If we can’t love one another, how can we love God? It is sad that people are destroyed by words. As I said earlier a person who gossips makes the devils work easier. And I thought he was the enemy; not our fellow believers?

In essence gossip is a curse which will destroy a body of believers quickly. If it doesn’t quit, then how many people will see honor and a good report of a certain church? Here are some scriptures about backbiting and gossip. Please study them. Study to show yourself approved. In the Word there are so many morsels of good food. If you need help please read the instructions.

I. Backbiting is forbidden by God.

Leviticus 19:17
Ephesians 4:31
1 Timothy 3: 11
James 4: 11

A. Those who spread slander cannot dwell with God, for He is holy.

Psalms 15:1-3

B. God calls them fools.

Proverbs 10:18

II. We are exhorted to "lay aside" all slander, and scripture advises 
us not even to associate with gossips.

1 Peter 2:1 
Proverbs 20:19

A. The tales of a gossip travel fast.

Ecclesiastes 10:20

B. The words of a slanderer spread strife and contention; they 
destroy friendships and stir up anger.

Proverbs 6:19; 15:1; 16:28; 17:9; 25:23; 26:20-22

C. The desire to backbite comes from a heart of bitterness and hatred.

III. Gossip was obviously a problem in the early church.

A. The devil will try to bring false accusations against believers 
through those in the world, to spread much slander about those 
who love God.

1 Peter 2:12; 3:16 
Revelation 12:10

B. But it is an especially serious matter when a brother in the Lord 
speaks evil of another brother (be it true or false). Such talk is nothing 
less than judgment on his part.

James 4: 11

 

The only way to stop gossip is to pray and ask forgivness. Then pray that you will not want to participate in such activity again. Remember the power of life and death is in what you say. Life and death! This is much to consider especially since we have this ability.
