In days when evil and calamity seems to abound on every side it is crucial to be able to see when good comes, and when one is in such a desolate place that one cannot see or hear good coming when it is clearly knocking at the door, it is a sign of a curse. There is little hope for that person for he or she is locked into their negativity and actually prefer it. The prophet Jeremiah put it this way: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from Yahweh. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes.” (Jer.17,v.5&6) Two verses later he says that the one who trusts in Yahweh will be like a tree “which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not see when heat comes, but its leaf will be green.” What a sharp contast! The one who trusts the LORD instead of man will be blessed with the ability to see the good when it comes and not to see or fear the blighting heat that comes to destroy it.
This blessing comes to the heart upon which is inscribed the law of God by the Spirit of God (Jeremiah 31 v33), not the heart we hear about at the beginning of chapter 17, the cursed heart of unbelief upon which is written the sin of Judah with a “pen of iron, with the point of a diamond it is engraved.”  This is the heart which refuses to be cheered, or braced or encouraged, because it is addicted to its own bitter brew of disappointment and dejection.
Sin either is blotted out or it blots out, which is to say:
Sin is either blotted out by the blood of the sacrifice (the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus, being the ultimate sacrifice),  or it blots out the perception and eventually the destiny of its slaves and victims.
