A Truly Quenched Thirst

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.” “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” John 4:13-18 NIV

Jesus continues his discussion with the Samaritan woman by letting her know about Living Water, which is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is given to those who believe in and accept the Lord. The Holy Spirit is self-perpetuating within the Christian. The Holy Spirit will remain until eternity within the true believer. The woman did not understand about Living Water, as she equated it to earthly water. This can be seen by her response back to Jesus. Yet, she did ask that the Living Water be provided to her. Jesus asking her to call her husband to come was, I believe, seeking to see if her heart was honest enough so that the conversation could proceed in the manner that Jesus wished. Her honesty led to Christ telling her enough about her past that she remarked that He must be a prophet.

When we come to Jesus, we must also come with an honest heart. We cannot hide our transgressions from Him. He already knows them anyway. He waits for us to come to Him with a sincerely repentant heart. We must have a true desire to be cleansed by Him. He will wash us clean! He loves us beyond our dreams.

We can learn so much from this conversation between our Lord and the Samaritan woman. It is wonderful that John was so inspired to include this within the gospel he penned, inspired by God.
