Before they lay me in a box
I have so many things to do
so many poems to write
so many songs to sing too.
Before they lay me in a box
I will have more sermons to preach
and more sermons to hear
maybe some students to teach.
Before they lay me in a box
I will have more prayers to create
More petitions to make
always more sins to forsake.
Before they lay me in a box
I hope to visit more people
whether glad,sick or sad
may I reach a vast steeple
Before they lay me in a box
I hope to count nothing too dear
'cept my Lord and Savior
upon whose breast I rest and fear.
Before they lay me in a box
I shall have met many a soul
who from my lips heard truth
Is this not a worthy goal?
Better still when I lay to rest
may I in Jesus Christ be found
angels gathered all around
singing a holy and solemn sound.
