An important scripture to keep in mind is found in Ecclesiastes 9:10  "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."

Years ago I recall my pastor mentioning from the pulpit that it would do some of the women in the congregation good to be better housekeepers.  It was no small rebuke to those he felt were sloppy, unclean and disorganized.  The husbands in the congregations should have been telling their wives what the pastor shared so candidly.

Whether you are single or married there is certainly work to be done so let us apply ourselves to the business of life while life lasts.  For those of you who own a home you might want to consider some wisdom from a wise source Matthew Henry who said:   "There is not only something to be obtained in this life but something to be done.  The chief good we are to seek after is the good we should do as we find in  Eccl. ii. 3. This world is where we serve others and the world to come is the world of recompence. In this world we are on probation and should prepare for eternity."

With the above in mind let us consider home maintenance.

Home maintenance is part of good business and stewardship and you should do it on a monthly and/or quarterly basis to extend the life of your home and save yourself money.  In the long run a home is an investment so use it wisely.

Here’s a small list of things you should consider doing this Spring.  You might want to buy a calendar or week-at-a glance book for writing down dates and for the purpose of keeping your home safe, functioning, and looking its best.

1.  Do an overall inspection of your home’s exterior. See if there’s any damage (paint chipping, holes in brick, etc.) and get everything repaired. This includes the roof, which may be damaged from snow or ice.

2.  Get your air conditioning ready. If you have central air, you may want to have it serviced. If you use window units, you’ll want to get those out of storage and get them installed.

3.  Clean out your gutters. Make sure everything’s flowing smoothly in preparation for spring showers.

4.  Aerate and fertilize the lawn. This is also the time to make sure the sprinkler system is working and put it back on a schedule.

 5.  Get the chimney cleaned. Creosote builds up after use, so now’s the time to get your chimney cleaned and inspected. The waitlist is much longer in the fall and if there’s any damage, you’ll want to get the work done ahead of the busy season.
