Understanding Success
Success is at the core of every human pursuit in this cosmos but this term has been largely misunderstood by the millions in this life’s journey. In part, our educational system has played a major contributing factor to this misunderstanding. The grading system in most educational institutions around the world tends to rank students according to their performance in a given test. This in itself is not wrong but it only becomes problematic when a student who scores higher on a given test falsely assumes that the benchmark for success in life is by contrast to the performance of others.
In this section, I shall challenge the societal definition of success which always tends to pitch people against other people, societies against other societies and even nations against other nations. I want to strongly suggest that success in life has absolutely nothing to do with comparisons with any other person or institution, whether it is a colleague at work or a business partner. Success in life is not outclassing or outbidding other people. You can always find somebody who is doing less than you are doing so you think you are successful. A lot of the unnecessary rivalry we witness today across all spheres of life can be attributed to our lack of understanding about what success really means. Unfortunately, our generation has been conditioned into believing that success is dependent on outpacing others or keeping them down. That is why we have a lot of conniving, colluding and corruption in societies today. These people mistakenly assume that, the only way to be successful is by keeping others poor. In the ensuing sections, we shall look at the basic principles needed for building corporate success but before that, it is very essential we understand the engine (success) that drives every communal action.
Everybody has the innate desire to be successful in this life but not all are and shall be successful. Life’s success as already indicated is not a contrast between what we have done and what others have done. Success is the potential destiny of all created things. Every seed has a tree in it and the potential success of the tree is in its seed. That’s the way you were also created. Whatever you were born to do and become is in you now and the success of your life is dependent on becoming all that is trapped within you. Ralph Waldo Emerson got it right when he said, “what lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

This clearly means that we all have a responsibility to find out why we were created in order to pursue that goal. Everything that exists under the sun was created because there was something that God wanted accomplished on earth that required it. The sun was created to primarily provide light, fruit bearing trees and herbs were created to serve as food for mankind, Martin Luther King was created to challenge the norm of his day and begin what was termed the Protestant movement, and also, part of the reason for my existence is to author this book.
Your existence is an indication that there is something that God wants done on earth that requires you. In other words, no one is an experiment on earth; everything was created for a purpose. Think about it; the rains were created to provide the answer to drought; mucus in your nostrils exists for the purpose of preventing germs from entering into your body. So the question becomes which solution were you created to provide for in this life? It is always possible to be successful at the wrong assignment and unfortunately many people in this journey of life could be categorized as “successful failures.” I am able to say this because the purpose of God for mankind revolves around a certain general principle according to the Bible.
