Roger Federrer vs. Adversities

Like many today, we consider it a strange thing to go through trials. But we know and understand that without going through certain trials in life, we shall not be able to develop certain virtues. We cannot develop courage unless through danger, we cannot develop patience and perseverance unless through obstacles, we cannot summon compassion if there were never anyone in need or in pain. The same goes for adversities.

Adversities in this life must be expected because without adversities, there are no guaranteed victories. Roger Federrer did not earn the title, the greatest in his sporting discipline in this era by simply presenting himself as a very good looking young man, even though he is good looking. He mostly has to fight, charge, cry, shout and squeeze every ounce of muscle in himself to overcome his opponents before he wins a Grand Slam. He had to do this consistently over several years in order to be revered as one of the best tennis players ever.
The 2008 Wimbledon Tennis Men’s Single final is considered as one of the greatest clashes in the history of the sport. This game took place between Roger Federrer and another world class Tennis player Rafael Nadal. Fortunately, I listened to a live commentary on my radio set and I considered myself fortunate because I definitely could not have withstood the intensity and tension that engulfed the game by watching it. Federrer had won not only both previous meetings, but had also been the Wimbledon champion for five years in a row and as trying to become the champion for a sixth consecutive year. Nadal, on the other hand, had just won the French Open for the fourth time in a row and was trying to win a rare French Open-Wimbledon double. Nadal eventually emerged champion after over 4 hours of electric showdown. He for the first time in many years dethroned Roger who was ranked number one in the sport at the time.

After a year, Federrer bounced back again winning both the French Open and Wimbledon championship. Achieving such feat requires strong will even in the face of intense adversity. In striving for mastery, you shall come across adversities, opponents, persecutions but the size of the adversity is necessary to determine the level of glory after your victory. Build your momentum as young as you may be today; develop that strong unwavering will as you journey towards the crown, and when the moment of glory is due, you shall definitely be crowned champion. Nadal remarked while in tears after the game that, “it was the most difficult game of my life.” Everyone reading this material must appreciate that in this journey of mastery, we cannot escape encountering very challenging circumstances but in all this, we need that strong will to sail through the storm. It is not the size of pot hole that matters; it is the shock absorbers available to you that shall enable you journey through safely. Apostle Paul recognized that opportunities and promotions comes with many adversaries, prepare yourself today to overcome tomorrow’s adversity and when that great door is also opened unto you, God shall empower you to overcome.
