THE SPEECH THAT CHANGED OUR TONGUES-604 BC
It is almost 7:00 PM and darkness has engulfed the whole community except the beam of light emanating from the mountain of firewood set purposefully for this special occasion. It is a cold night but unfortunately, the luxury of blankets and cardigans is thousands of years beyond their imagination. For now, they shall manage with the Alpaca and Calico made from animals and plants respectively.
The townsmen gather around this huge bonfire to catch some warmth and also enjoy the miming and acrobatic displays from the female dancers. This day, everybody from neighboring communities gather at the community grounds to witness the historic declaration and also enjoy the company of each other. Even though the population is on the high, they enjoy a strong bond of familiarity and togetherness.
The people see this special night as an occasion to assure themselves of their commitment to the security of each other in the midst of the dangerous wild. The world is a vast and unsafe place, and staying together to them is the only reasonable option.
This night is a special night because the community elders have a special pronouncement that is very vital to their very survival. As the community elders approach their seats, dressed in their full regalia, the cheers become thunderous as the acrobat displays come to a halt. This night is the moment they take their destiny into their own hands and everybody gathered is keenly aware of what is at stake.
With a stroke of his hand, the “Togbe’ also known as the Eldest chief calms the cheering crowd and urges all to listen to the declaration of the elders. He masterfully brings to bare the art of persuasion as he appeals to the emotions and fears of his constituents.
In a solemnly but an aggressive tone, he moves the crowd with his poetic oration;
Oh how wretched we are, who shall save us from this perilous life?
As the hunter hunts for his prey, so have our children fallen prey to the beast of this wild;
Who shall save us from this tempest? Who shall save us from this dreadful place?
As the sacred night Owl breaks forth with its hooting call, and brings chills upon us in our beds at night, so does the fear of the unknown world cripple us during the day;
Oh how wretched we are, who shall rise up to challenge the tides of dread. Who? I demand!!
We may be crippled by the dangers of the unknown but we stand together. We may be cast down by the severe natural occurrences but we have something stronger; we have each other.
We may lead a dog’s life out here but soon I promise all, we shall live in palaces. We may be cast down but as a unit we shall rise tall.
Today, tonight a new dawn has come. Today, this night we take our destinies into our hands.
As a people responsible for our survival, tonight we prepare to make history no matter the cost. Tonight we shall dare the unknown to discover the hidden.
Tonight marks the genesis of a journey that shall take us to our homeland. A plain where we could escape this wretched life and live in dignity as human beings;
I do not know which pillager awaits us out there but I can assure you one thing, together we shall stand and together we shall fall. Together we shall move and together we shall conquer. This day, this night, change has come. Tonight we prepare to journey, at the rising of the sun, we journey into the unknown world to find a better home. Tonight we prepare to journey from the East.[The Crowd goes bananas and ecstatic as he brings his speech to a rousing end].
