Pain, Sorrow And Suffering

© 2015 by Stephen A. Peterson

As the time when the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration. He wrote them to observe the days as days of feasting and joy and giving presents of food to one another and gifts to the poor.

Esther 9:22 (NIV)

Pain, sorrow, suffering is a part of living: sooner or later it visits all. But not all react in the exact same manner. Some mellow, cry, complain, become depressed, fall apart, blame others, curse, commit suicide, destroy others; others harden, emerge stronger, excel, fight on, rise up, become wealthy, learn, build, positively influence others, stand tall. Surviving pain, sorrow and suffering, can beautify one’s life like rainfall to a dying flower to make it more beautiful than before. On the other hand, pain, sorrow, suffering may produce pity, add to sincerity and bring a person down to the ground of reality.

Pain, sorrow, suffering must be for the good of humanity or humanity would not have been given the capacity for it, but so is joy. Pain, sorrow, suffering is so potent, however, that humanity needs it only in small amounts for brief periods, but humanity requires joy in large doses for long durations.

Prayer:

Almighty Father, hear my cry expressed during this most painful, sorrowful period of suffering. The sorrow that grips my heart and soul I do not understand but has driven me to You, my God who I know is my protector and true friend. Father, You know my weaknesses, faults and sins. I come before You with a contrite spirit with the knowledge that You can and will forgive me of my sins. I know also that You wish me no harm but to strengthen me. Help me to carry this cross that You have given me for I am unable to do so on my own. I seek the shelter of Your unconditional love knowing that I will benefit from this trial. These things I pray. Amen.
