The Science Of Speech And Silence

Stephen A. Peterson

…a time to keep silence and a time to speak.

Ecclesiastes 3:7 (NIV)

Silence is not always better than speech, but it is always good enough for us to think twice before one breaks their silence.

The better choice is to be discerning enough to recognize when to speak and when to be silent and listen. Nothing so designates a person quicker than their rapid firing tongue—what a person says and does not say.

A good rule to follow is: If one’s words are not worth more than one’s silence, one is suggested he or she not waste them. And in the event one should violate the first rule, then follow the second: If one could talk to oneself into trouble, listen oneself out. There are two sciences which every person ought to learn: First, the silence of speech; second, the more difficult one of silence.

Prayer:

O Lord, Master of all things, take hold of my tongue, open my ears to make room for You. Free my mind and open my heart so that I may welcome You into my most inner being. Give me comfort for what distracts me. Give me peace for what worries me. Give me strength for what weakens me when I am broken. All I have to offer You, Lord, are my feeble efforts. I lift up my heart and soul to You in silence to hear and reflect upon Your voice and guidance. Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening. These things I pray. Amen
