“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4 ESV)

Have you ever seen shepherds taking care of their sheep and goats? David is resembling himself to a sheep walking through the valley of the shadow of death: full of danger and threats. Even today we experience such situations. For any problem to be solved, the central or core reason should first be identified. Every problematic situations have either of the two reasons mentioned below.

First, the problem may come directly from God either to prune us in order that we become more fruitful OR it may come as our part in sharing the sufferings of Christ OR it may come as a punishment from God for our wrong acts, however, as a father punishes the son whom he loves. This type of problems are for those Christians who walk according to the will of God and believe that all things work together for their good, God is taking control over everything, all things are taking place by the knowledge of God and God is working out for their ultimate good. The ultimate purpose of God is to make us more and more like His Son.

In such an experience of the valley of the shadow of death, a true Christian fears no evil. Ahead comes the reason: For you are with me. Do you know God IS WITH you? If you really experience God’s presence through faith, you can overcome all your fears. Jesus, also named Emmanuel which means God is with us has given us this promise: “I am with you always”. He says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Next, the psalmist says: Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. God drives away all the obstacles that can hinder our relationship with Him, through His rod and staff. Not every problem we see is a hindrance, but some problems come from the wicked one to make us weak in faith, to doubt God. If we stand firm during such troubled times, God will drive away all the functions of the evil one.

Second, problems occur naturally to natural people. It is a commonly known fact that life is not a bed of roses. But in a Christian’s life, he has the presence and comfort of God, which leads him to believe that one day everything will be alright.

Dear brother/sister, what type of problem or difficulty are you going through right now? Do you think God has left you? No, and He never can! Just be a little more prayerful, give praise to your Lord, grow in your faith. The time is coming when you and others will really know the fruit and reward of suffering under the will of God.

Your good reward is coming, be a little more patient for your blessing.
