An artist was separating from her husband. It would end in a long drawn out, painful divorce. In one of their last conversations he asked for one of her small creations, a woven placemat, and she responded in disbelief, “You want something of MINE?!” “Why, yes, I appreciate your work,” he answered. Maybe it had sentimental value for him, but even without that it had artistic value that he recognized. He definitely had no plans to throw darts at it, if that was what she suspected. Maybe it played some small (or not so small) role in softening the deep sense of loss.
True art and it’s appreciation can transcend the ugly relational details of a messy divorce, yes, and sometimes even helps begin the healing process that follows.
