A newly hired government worker received a big box in the special delivery mail. The agency he would be working for had sent him a laptop computer complete with case, manuals and detailed start up instructions. This government agency had made a significant investment in him as an incoming employee. They had demonstrated that they were in earnest concerning him.
He was reminded how God in His own government does something similar with His children in response to their faith, sending His Holy Spirit to Indwell them as a kind of down payment or earnest payment, (Romans chapter 8 verse 23) the earnest of an abundant inheritance to come, thus demonstrating that He is serious about being a Father to them, He is in “earnest” about welcoming them (us) into His great family, to possess us as His very own.
