To lie and cheat, and succumb to greed in regard to the things of God that we have been privileged to witness and experience is most grievous to the Holy Spirit. That is why the consequences were so severe for not only Gehazi, servant of Elisha, but also his descendants after him. (2 Kings 5,v25 to 27)

More than likely Gehazi had been present when his master, the prophet Elisha, had issued the supernatural “prescription” for the healing of Namaan, the leperous Syrian captain. He had been privileged to see the numerous miracles performed by Elisha, fourteen of them to be exact. (Twice as many as did Elijah of whose anointing Elisha had a double portion.) Death and sickness, and suffering had been put to flight, only for some of it now to return to him, boomeranging back upon him due to his covetousness. Namaan had been healed of leprosy and Gehazi could testify to it, only to hear his master Elisha pronounce that same leprosy over him and his seed now as a punishment for his conniving scheme.

Is there a larger principle at work here? What healings and deliverance we’ve had part in, if we’re unfaithful to them by betraying the trust of our Master and Lord, we bring back upon ourselves catastrophically the very misery and affliction we saw leave the lives of others so gloriously and miraculously. It is a great incentive for us to walk with care daily in the fear and admonition of our God, knowing that for each wonder we witness our responsibility grows, as margins for error are shrinking; because our paths must necessarily grow more narrow to enter into the life God has prepared for us.

We are his set apart ones (His wonderful ones, literally) We “stumble upon wonder upon wonder, and every wonder true” and to whom much is given, much is required. May God grant us His grace to live up to what we’ve seen and walk worthy of it and Him, and may He continue to extend His mercy toward us!
