Stop Sign

I was angry. It was totally unfair! I jumped in the car and sped down the street, abruptly stopping just in front of the stop sign. I was about to hit the gas again when I saw walking across the far crosswalk a homeless old man, wearing several coats, and carrying several bags over his shoulder. He was stooped forward under the weight, and as I looked closer he had a deeply pained expression on his face, as if he was carrying the weight of the entire world on his shoulders.

As the old man reached the curb on the other side my anger drained out of me like someone had pulled a plug on a sink full of dirty dish water. It dawned on me that while I was busy nursing my hurt feelings over not getting what I wanted , the unbelievable suffering that many people deal with on a daily basis was going on all around me, unnoticed, and the only thing my anger was doing was adding to it.


Is this not the kind of fasting I have chosen; to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share the your food with the hungry, and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked clothe him, and not turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear, and your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer, you will cry for help and he will say: Here I am. – Isaiah 58: 6-9
