Shining silver and chrome, flaming tongues of fire painted yellow and red on the banana seat, five speed stick shift on the cross bar. The Stingray wasn’t just a new bike, it was a new kind of bike. It was fun just to look at, and for a young boy, thrilling to ride, at first. Over time, however, the newness wore off, and after carelessly leaving it in our front yard overnight it was stolen and later found in the bottom of the river.

Growing up I learned the word “new” meant something that would only be new a short while. No matter what it was, over time the newness would wear off, and I’d get bored with it, and I’d want to get something new again to replace what had become old.

In God’s word we are told that as believers we have been made “new,” but this isn’t like any new we’ve experienced before. This is a new kind of newness. When our sinful natures die with Christ he brings us back to life as new people, freed from our past, desiring to love God & his children, and holding a new sense of awe for his creation. God’s kind of newness will never be boring, will never get old, and will never wear out.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. – 2nd Corinthians 5:17

He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true. – Revelation 21:5
