You In or Out?

In the book A Million Miles in a Thousand Years author Donald Miller tells how he realized that if his life were a story, it would be a boring read. So he decided to write a better story with his life, and better stories involve a character who wants something and overcomes conflict in order to get it. In order to get the character moving towards something, there must be an inciting incident, something that occurs that drives them to act. It could be an unplanned event, or a decision, that pushes them into something where there is no turning back.

When the twelve disciples saw Jesus walking on the water in the middle of the lake, only Peter chose the challenge of the waves over the safety of the boat. Peter’s decision to step out of the boat was his inciting incident, and once out of the boat, he had no choice but to start walking. And though he was immediately afraid, he called out to God as he began to sink, and Jesus reached out to him, and raised him up.


God grant me the courage to get out of the boat, and walk towards you, whatever that means and whatever that looks like. Help me to write a story with my life that speaks of your passion and love for life, for truth, for beauty, for peace. Amen.
