Obedience

I used to have a nail bucket, and when I was done with a home improvement project, I’d throw the left-over nails into a bucket. Over time, the bucket filled up with a vast assortment of different nails- long, thick nails, short skinny nails, grooved nails, square cement nails, nails of every kind. One day I emptied the nails onto my work bench determined to sort them out. As I began grouping into piles of similar nails, a question arose in my mind - what kind of nail, made by human hands, could pin the God of the universe to a bloody cross? How was that possible? Then it hit me - it wasn’t the nails that held him, it was love, a trusting, obedient love.

A young, financially secure suburbanite woman once described how she spent a lot of time, money and effort fixing up a guest room in her house, so when parents or friends came to visit they would have a nice room to use. When she finally got it done, it was perfect. But, as she stood in the hallway admiring the beautiful room, God spoke to her heart, and the message was that the room she fixed up wasn’t going to be for guests. It was going to be for a child they would adopt from a foreign country. After heeding God’s voice, and adopting a child, her life has been difficult, unpredictable, but also joyful and full, and she wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. – Mathew 10:39
