When I was about ten years old I watched a friend climb a tree, after he asked me to watch him so he could earn his Cub Scout badge. I wasn't in Cub Scouts, and not being very strong or athletic, I could only admire trees from the ground.

In God’s word there’s a story of guy who climbed a tree to get a better view of Jesus as he walked by. Turned out to be a good idea, as Jesus saw him up in that tree and ended up spending the evening at his house, where he and his whole family were transformed by the presence of God.

Life coaches suggest we place in our environment “structures” that prompt us to make choices that reflect our goals. Below are structures that have to do with drawing closer to Jesus. Maybe there is one that appeals to you, or maybe this list will inspire you to create one of your own, one that will help you catch a glimpse of God.

• Buy a unique, beautiful “prayer rug” and place it where seeing it will prompt you to pray first thing each morning or some other special time.
• Place a broken piece of pottery or some other broken object on your desk to remind you that brokenness is beautiful in God’s sight, that God uses broken people to reach the world.
• Find a special ring to wear on your finger to remind you that you help people in need, whenever you can.
• Go online and check out the various bible translations. Find one worded in such a way that it appeals to you, and then buy that version. Make a colorful cover for your new bible, and keep the bible on a kitchen table or another place where you’ll see it every day, pick it up and read it. If you are tech-minded, download the best bible app you can find.
• Subscribe to a Christian publication with articles that challenge you to grow in your faith.
