'Words' are only a part of the writer's 'arsenal.' If 'words,' alone, were the dividing line between those who write effectively and those who do not, there would be no benchmarks, as EACH person has access to the treasure trove of 'words.' If 'words,
alone, WERE the benchmarks, ALL who use them would be on common ground, equal footing....a level playing field. (And we KNOW THAT is NOT the case.)

Beyond (or prior to) the usage of 'words' is motivation. The "whys" of literary endeavor are as varied as the words we use! Some writers feel 'compelled' while others 'have a knack.' One writer writes because he or she 'likes to write' but another may be 'inspired.' Whatever the motivation, it MUST exist!

So, upon being duly motivated, what factors enter the equation for writing? A good starting point may be a question one must ask: What shall I write ABOUT? But we possibly need to precede THAT question with determining an area of interest....prose (short stories, fiction, non-fiction, technical, inspirational), poetry (again, with many possible pursuits).

The climb to writing 'words' has started, but is by no means complete .Motivation and the vehicle used to 'get there' must be accompanied by PREPARATION! We must know our material. We must be familiar with our subject, and if NOT.....GET FAMILIAR! RESEARCH! Few will ever 'master' the language, but a short vocabulary can do wonders if used with an eye for correctness, and compilation of factual narration.

Another side of PREPARATION has to be 'word' management. How well do we arrange our thoughts for presentation to the paper? We are motivated, we have picked a medium and we KNOW our subject, so what else is there? There is the assembling of word selection into attractive, readable and UNDERSTANDABLE writing. There is the developing of patterns and descriptives that make a reader WANT to continue....to SEE what the next sentence says....to ANTICIPATE the next.....WORD!

So what IS the writers input into his own destiny? To learn WHY he or she writes, to be motivated TO write and to be prepared FOR the writing experience.

Writing can be very rewarding. Not ALWAYS monetarily, but THAT is possible. Writing may be a private world or a pursuit which one chooses to share. My own writing began at an early age, continued througout a lifetime, with only a small portion shared until I reached 'senior-citizen' status. In hindsight, I can discourage this method.

MY motivation, it seems, is more attributable to 'inspiration'....and likely to be in the form of a poem. I am inspired by many facets of life....nature, the seasons, associates, friends. My thoughts soar to lofty heights, far beyond what my limited education SHOULD allow. When an idea comes to mind, I can recognize immediately if it is a thought from my own limited intellect or if Someone is trying to tell me something! MY words often fall flat....HIS NEVER DO!

So, writers, KNOW that factors exist which can enhance your message. Know about motivation, preparation and all the rest, but beyond the 'mechanics,' remain openly sensitive to that Voice from Somewhere, that gently urges and 'plants' seeds of possibility.

Very inspiring article, Howard. Sometimes words don't come to us very easily and other times we are really inspired. I always have to ask the good Lord to help me with my articles or poems. Thanks for sharing those pointers about "Words".
