The fear of the Lord is the start of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One gives a wise mind. (Pro 9:10, BBE)
I was brought up to have reverent for my father. A major part of that was to consider if he approved of what I wanted to do. As a result, I developed a relationship with him that was special in my childhood and through my teenage years. I listen to him carefully when he spoke to know exactly what he considered right and wrong. I sought to please him in everything I did.
Over time, I got to know how he thought and what his principles were. So, I could make decisions knowing that he would approve of them.
The relationship with my father saved me many troubles in my teenage years. And whenever I disobeyed his advice, I ended up in trouble.
I remember I made friends with a few lads when I was 15 years old. The boys were into staying away from home overnight and drinking. One day, my dad took me aside and told me that he didn’t like my friends because they had a bad influence on me. “Cut your connection with them, if you cared for your future,” my dad told me.
I said I would, but I secretly continued those friendships. I began to miss classes at school to spend time with them. It was no surprise that my school results were very bad at the end of that academic year.
That year I learned a big lesson: reverence for my father helped me make wise choices. Because I drew on the knowledge and experiences of someone who had lived and experienced life a lot longer than I. In addition, he cared for me more than I could ever imagine or could care for myself.
God cares for us more than we can ever imagine. His love for us is as this hymn puts it,
“…deeper than the deepest ocean,
Wider than the sky.
…brighter than the brightest star
that shines every night above;
And there is nothing in this world
That can ever change His love.”
Having reverence for the Lord leads us to a special relationship with Him in which we gain His wisdom for living godly lives, and find fulfilment in an ever-deepening love relationship in history of mankind!
May you and I become wiser every day by finding deeper reverence for the Lord!
