1. It can’t tell you how Jesus helps you forgive yourself for messing up (Colo. 2:13)!
Alex loved playing with dart when he was six or seven. He can’t remember where he got his love for the dangerous game from. Somehow, he managed to get hold of a dart and played with it as often as he could during summer holidays. He made sure his parents never found out about it.
One day, as he was playing, he threw his dart and it hit the ground, slid on the surface of the road a few meters before it hit and penetrated into another child’s foot. The kid was younger than him.
Alex was scared to death. He knew he’d done a criminal thing but didn’t know how to handle it, being that young. So, he ran, pulled out the dart and escaped the scene. He never told anyone about it.
Thank God, the boy recovered from the injury in a few days. He was out playing within a week. But Alex carried the guilt in his heart for years.
When he became Christian, one of the things Jesus set him free from was the sense of shame and guilt that he carried because of that incident.
‘It was one thing to know that the boy recovered from the incident resulting from my foolish mistake,’ said Alex, ‘but it was another to be able to forgive myself!’ ‘The sense of freedom and peace that came from that was, and still is, inexpressible.’
2. It can’t tell you how Jesus helps you recover the lost years of life (Joel 2:25)!
One of my friends spent his 20s in illegal activities. He ended up wrecked with drug addiction. At the height of his criminal activities, he met a man who told him about Jesus. A year or so later, my friend gave his heart to the Lord and set out on the road to recovery.
He washed his hands of his illegal activities and stopped using drugs by receiving help from a rehab centre.
Today, he is a Christian leader and serves in a local church. His heart beats to take the message that saved him to those who need it. He is unstoppable in spreading the good news that Jesus saves and restores the lost years.
He acknowledges that Jesus saved him from his ‘sure death’ and gave him a second chance to live a meaningful life— a life with purpose.
3. It can’t tell you how Jesus help you win where you have always lost (Ps. 147:3)!
I recently baptised a new Christian. He is Afghan. When I introduced him to the congregation and asked him about what Jesus did for him, he said:
‘I was so hurt I kept running to alcoholic drink. I didn’t have a day went by without drinking. When I came to the church people prayed with me and I stopped drinking. I haven’t had any drinks for several months.’
I was deeply touched; so did everyone else.
God had healed his deep wounds that he needed not to drink anymore.
Jesus helps us win where we have always lost before, be it addiction or intemperance of some kind.
Will power is not enough to break free in some major areas of our lives. Our will is broken because of sin.
Jesus restores our will and sets us free from entanglement so we can become the person that God has made us to be.
