How To Keep Focused Despite All Distractions

There are many demands in life: work, relationships, study, etc. In addition, every now and then, there are problems to sort out. There is always something that seeks to grab our attention and energy.

In the midst of all these, we need to live a life focused on what matters most: God. But how can we maintain a focus that helps us keep a clear mind- keep the first thing first?

The bible helps us with that in the following three ways:

1. Be brave!

...Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord... (2 Tim. 4:5, NLT)

Fear is one of the most distracting forces! If we allow it, it chokes the work of God in our hearts and takes us off course.

Fear of suffering financial constraint or even of financial loss, fear of rejection, fear of losing friends, fear of the future, etc. can easily divert our attention and effort away from God’s call on our lives.

The promises of God are the antidotes to these. David understood the importance of God's promises when he said,

'His faithful promises are your armor and protection'. (Ps. 91:4, NLT)

If we hang on to God’s promises for our needs and future security, we will be able to face our fears and win the inner battle.

We will keep a clear mind in every situation!

2. Work at telling others the Good News! (2 Tim. 4:5, NLT)

Telling others the Good News is what God has called us to do. But it is not an easy task. We have to keep working on our methods to keep them relevant to those we reach out to.

Working on this alone will help keep us focused and clear-headed.

I need to work hard on this. I commute to work four hours a day. Plus, I work with Christians. I can go for days without having any contact with non-Christians.

I have to plan in advance to visit places where I can meet non-Christians and create an environment to help me tell them about the Good News.

In addition, Birmingham, where I live, is a cosmopolitan city. I need to keep learning and developing skills to be able to relate to people of different backgrounds and ethnicity.

3. Fully perform your ministry!

... fully carry out the ministry God has given you. (2 Tim. 4:5, NLT)

In the body of Christ, the church, we are all ministers. I find Focusing on how I perform my ministry keeps my mind clear of all distractions. Because I have to think about what I do. Who I do it for. How I do it. And keep learning to do it to the best of my ability and with the strength that the Lord provides.

I have realised, over the years, that if I keep my mind focus on these things, I stay clear of all sorts of distractions. But I get into all kinds of trouble when I neglect paying attention to them.

What other ways do you know that help keep our minds clear? Please leave a comment.

Wonderful ways to keep distractions away. You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3 Keep up the good work.
