Recently I pulled a batch of letters from my closet which were snuffed in an old envelope. My great grandmother had obviously saved these for some reason. She was good at that kind of thing. I still have my brown baby booties she packed inside a small paper bag. They are actually in pretty good shape because they were made of leather presumably in America and not some place like China or some third rate manufacturing company.

Well, the following is a letter my mother Elvada Overall (maiden name) wrote to my great grandmother and me when I was a young boy.


Oct 4, 1966


Dear Grandma & Carl,

Sorry I hung up on the phone but the technician scared me. Tell Carl I'll try & listen to him poor little thing. His mother like she is. Grandma Mark used to keep me awake at night & the things he did -----------------(a black marker rubbed out some words) you know what I mean, just plain mean things in every way. Well I love Carl & love you. I love dad & mom. I love Shyla & Jerina even though I talk about my family. Listen I think of them-I know I've hurt them a lot more than I've hurt anyone. I'm paying for it too. I'll try & be good to myself. Grandma I started to smoke but never I wanted to write you this letter. Well I'm expecting to see you & Carl.
So you don't think I care. I do. I care how I treat myself. I care how I treat other people. Good people grandma.
