Notice how much Jesus Messiah quotes the psalms as he proceeds through the pains of his passion experience, culminating on the cross. In the garden of Gethsemane he laments that his soul is “swallowed up in sorrow to the point of death” seeming to allude to the 42nd and 43rd psalms attributed to Asaph. It was another way of him saying that he was so sad he could die! But principally on the cross he alludes to the psalms of David; “My God, My God why have you forsaken me?!” (Psalm 22 v. 1) and, “Into Your hands I commit (entrust) my spirit!” (Psalm 31 v.5) It was as though David and Asaph by the Spirit of God had helped to plot Messiah’s course through his passion 1000 years ahead of time. Jesus sounds like a psalmist himself during these moments in the garden and on the cross of his crucifixion. After all, it is not accidental that one of the names of our Savior is the “Son of David.”
