The manager of the tire place called me out to the garage to show me how dangerously tight the lug bolts were. “We’re afraid if we apply too much torque we’ll bust em.”

“Are the others on the other tires the same way?” I asked.

“Most likely.”

“Let’s try them.” I suggested. They did and were able to loosen them all..

“It’s just this one then, we have to warn you, cost another 50 bucks if it breaks.”

“We have no choice, have to pass inspection.” I said.

“Maybe you’ll get lucky.”

“Let’s pray right now they won’t break in Jesus name.”

“We can do that.”

None of the bolts were turning out to be problem after all, as the mechanic made his way around the tire.

“Not bad for a carpenter, huh.” I observed.

“He was more of a brick mason” replied the manager, and pulled a silver cross out from under his t shirt to show me.

“You’re right, he was a builder, not just a carpenter.” I agreed. A builder he was, and still is……of new friendships, for example. Turned out, too, we had both lived in Alaska.
