Expanding on question 3 from Challenge 33:

3.       Should we be concerned whether other religious groups abide by those principles they claim to live by or not?

The simple answer for me is ‘Yes,’ we should be concerned.

If you live by a certain code of conduct then that helps me to know what to expect and what not to expect from you. In knowing the principles you live by it helps me to avoid disrespecting you inadvertently.

For example, if I invite a friend to dinner:

a)      It would be disrespectful of me to place a certain meat dish before them if I knew that they avoid eating it due to religious beliefs.

b)      I would not include alcoholic beverages if I knew that they abstained from it for religious purposes just as I wouldn’t include it if they are either struggling with an addiction or they are trying to give up alcohol.

However, in the context of how the question was asked, the answer would be no. If I claim that I do not believe in God, then it really should not matter to me what other people who claim to believe in Him do or do not do. Why is that? If I do not believe in the existence of God then I would not have a need to govern my life by the principles that God sets before me. If I do not have a need to obey His rules then I should not expect to benefit from those same rules by expecting others to abide by those rules. Again, as stated in part one, God is not like man and He allows the sun to shine on the just as well as the unjust. Therefore, whether we believe in God or not, whether we agree or disagree that we should or shouldn’t benefit from those principles, really does not matter.
