Deeper Waters (Psalm 42:7)
“Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls. All Your waves and billows have gone over me.”
Today’s eWord is an invitation from a Father who delights in His children and wants to see them grow and fulfill their potential in the power of His Spirit. Read this message with your heart and feel His love drawing you deep!
A few months ago I was standing on a beach in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and talking to God as I drank in a glorious view. The ocean looked so inviting and beckoned me in, but I chose to sit in the shallows and enjoy the friendship of some gentle waves. The next day the ocean called me in again and so I stepped in until the water was up to my waist. The day after, I went in a little deeper and I thought I was swimming in shallow water until I found I was beyond my depth. I panicked a little when my feet could not find the ground, but I heard the Holy Spirit say “It is good to be beyond your depth. Now you can learn to really trust in Me.” As I just yielded to the movement of the water that day, I learned lessons in Holy Spirit school which I will never forget. He took fear away and taught me that we can only truly begin to know Him if we go deep and allow the waves to crash over us. There is a realm of God that is only possible when we step into the unknown, into the unchartered waters of the Spirit. Deep calls to deep with the voice of rushing waters (Revelations 1:15) but unless we respond as He wishes and leave the shore, there will be no further revelation in our lives.
What is the Holy Spirit saying when Deep calls to deep?
He is calling us deeper! Friend, there is so much more in store! There are deeper revelations of God’s glory and goodness. There are deeper encounters with the Father, Holy Spirit and Jesus. There are deeper levels of holiness and power, and deeper Truths from His Word. There is a deeper place of worship, fellowship and intimacy with the King. There is a dimension of deeper water which we are invited to step into and whether we accept or not is entirely a matter of choice, but those waters are full of life and power and victory. Wherever we are in our walk with God, there is always a deeper level we can go to because God is infinite and there is always more!
Are you willing to give Him the wheel? The Psalmist said “All Your waves and billows have gone over me”. We cannot control the waves of the ocean and we certainly cannot attempt to control the almighty Holy Spirit and tell Him what He can and cannot do. Jesus said to Nicodemus in John 3:8 that the Wind blows where it wishes and that it is the same with the Holy Spirit. He is God! There is a realm in God we will know only when we yield to the crashing waves and allow them to carry us where they go. He often speaks in a gentle whisper, and can be a real gentleman; but He can also be like a huge crashing waterfall – a powerful, unstoppable, waterfall which moves everything that stands in its path, turns a desert into a verdant pool and brings life where there was death.
Psalm 42 begins with the words “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” Stepping into the deeper realms of God begins with a thirsting for more. You start with drinking a few sips from the water brook and then you taste and see that He is so good! The more you experience of the fullness of God’s love through the Holy Spirit, the more you need and the more you seek, until Deep begins to beckon to deep, calling you out beyond the safety line, into the wild, wondrous waters which move as they please, hallelujah! As you step out in faith, trusting the Lord of Love to do what is best, you will see the fulfillment of Psalm 42 verse 8: “The Lord will command His loving kindness in the daytime. And in the night His song shall be with me.” The Lord, in His love, will begin to move you where He wills, in the day or in the night – at His time, in His way, according to His will because He is in charge. Deep communicates with deep, (Spirit to spirit), so He is in action in the day or during the night, because He never slumbers nor sleeps.
Although I grew up an island girl, I have always been a little afraid of the vastness of the ocean. However, that day when the Holy Spirit spoke to me as I swam in Montego Bay, I knew I was born to discover the depths. There is beauty out there which I will never see unless I decide to go deep. The infinite realms of the Spirit are available for you and me, but we have to want them, and decide to answer this call to go deep. We also have to get rid of all the mindsets, experience and teaching which make us afraid of the unknown realms of God and keep us comfortable with what we know and can control. There are also heavy weights which shackle us and stop us swimming out – unforgiveness, grudges and offences which hold us back and hinder the awesome depths God is drawing us to. I want God to take me out so deep into the ocean of His Spirit that I will never be able to find my way back into the shallows. I want to be a deep sea creature forever, trusting Him and yielding to the waves and the billows crashing over me. I want to ride the giant surf and see the mighty things my mighty God wants to do, hallelujah!
Friend, our Abba God is so pleased with your love for Him and how you have received His Spirit into your life. Now He is calling you to leave the shallow waters and to step in to “Deep.” There is a breaker anointing which can only be received as you go deep into the Ocean of the Spirit and become as one with Him, and this is what God has for you. It is going to be the adventure of your life and a wonderful ride! May His loving kindness be your portion in the day and through each night as you dive into the deep things of God and step into new realms of His love. All the glories of the Deep are yours through the precious blood of Jesus. Dive in and let Him take you deep!
