A former comedian's favorite line used to be, "The devil made me
do it." That's passing the buck -- we control our actions.

On the way to church, a little squirrel darted across the road in
front of us. I commented to Betty, "Wow did you see his little legs
move?" Back in my high school days, I did the 100 yard dash in
10.3. That was fast back then, but if I could have moved my legs
with the rapidity of a squirrel, I could have easily broken the world
record.

The writer of Hebrews talks about running in 12:1 (nlt), "There-
fore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses
to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down,
especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us
run with endurance the race that God has set before us."

Some Christians are good at 100 dashes (they work for God in
short spurts), but the preceding verse speaks of endurance -- that
indicates that we need to be marathon workers for the Lord --
enduring for the long haul. Are you old enough to remember the
gospel song, "Never Give Up?" It's still valid.

So, how fast should we run? Fast enough to stay one step in front
of the devil. 1 Tim. 6:11, "...RUN from all these evil things and
follow what is right and good." That's what I call good advice --
let's practice it!
