With Me
“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”
Luke 15:31-32 (NIV)
My father and mother have long passed away, I miss this both. I know they are safe and in good hands but I miss them. My mother and father are no longer with me. They are not here to talk to, get advice, spend time, break bread, hug, and just plain be with. I know most reading this can relate about the loss of any loved one. There are times I wish they could just come back and be with me.
When the Prodigal Son told his father he considered him dead and wanted his inheritance now, had to be heartbreaking for the father. The son took the inheritance and went off and squandered the inheritance on wine, women and song. As we see in the parable the father considered his younger son, lost and dead. Why would he think in those terms? Because his son was no longer with him. He believed his son was gone forever and never to be seen again.
Jesus tells us in his parable that when the son was far off, the father saw his son. Was the father angry, resentful, upset, ticked off and ready to come to fisticuffs? Nope, Jesus tells us the father was filled with compassion. The father was so happy his son returned he threw him a party. The older son saw the festivities and became enraged when he heard what the party was for and that the fatted calf was killed to celebrate. How could this no good rotten, dirty so and so of a brother of his get such a warm reception?
The father and the older son had a conversation about this very thing. The son was angry and said how could you throw a party for this low life, dead beat, thief of a brother of mine? I have been with you this whole time working and slaving for you, I have been a loyal son. The Father looked at his older son and told him your brother was dead he was lost and now he is alive and found. Your brother is back with us, he is with me. Yes you are always with me. That is what I want for both sons to be with me. That is all I have ever wanted for him to come home and be with me.
That’s what God wants, He wants us to be with him. Are you lost? Come back to Our Father. Are you dead? Arise, come back to Our Father. If you are already here, rejoice. When our lost and dead return, rejoice. God wants to be with us. God wants to say I am so glad you are with me.
God Bless
