Disciples Appearance

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
John 13:35 (NIV)

Do you know what a disciple is? Well it is a follower, a learner, pupil and apprentice. Do you know what a disciple of Jesus is? A Jesus disciple is a follower, learner, pupil, apprentice, and lover of others. That last one, lover of others sure is a distinct add on. Jesus never called his followers Christians, he called them disciples. Are you a disciple? Am I a disciple? Would we know a disciple if you met one? Many call themselves Christians but are they disciples?

Many people call themselves something; they have labels and way of knowing who they are. If you saw someone in a team uniform you would know what team they are on. Gang colors distinguish there gang. If a guy was wearing a Home Depot Polo Shirt you could probably guess where he works. If someone was wearing a green shirt that said Erin Go Bragh on it and spoke with a brogue you may be able to guess where they are from.

How then do we know who a disciple is? Many would say of course you mean the Christians. You mean those people that go around bashing each other’s beliefs, the ones that point out each other’s sins and judge everyone. No I am talking about a disciple a Christ follower, learner, apprentice and lover of others. Jesus said disciples will be recognized when we love one another. Do we sincerely love one another do we treat each other with the love Jesus has shown us. Do we treat others with that love? Can people see we are true Christians true Christ Followers true Disciples of Christ?

Let’s not waste words, Love speaks louder than words. Forget the T-shirts, jewelry, ictus, bumper stickers, rubber bracelets, tattoos, and all the God gear. Let others know we are disciples of Jesus by our love for them and our love for one another in the same way Jesus loves us. Love speaks louder than words.
