My mother Elvada Roland wrote me about five letters while I was living at Mary Graham Hall just after leaving my aunt and uncles.
This is the second letter. I'm sure these letters will mean more to me in the future when my mother is no longer living. Looking back on them now I see my mother as some one who cared a lot about me even though she wasn't able to care for me or her other children.



May 1, 1971


Hi Carl,

Hope you are well & happy.
I may not seem too concerned toward you at the wrong times.
But I want you to know that mommie loves you son very much not only because you are intelligent. I am concerned about your personal welfare. I will try & see you when I am off this ward t.-4. I love you & want you to be happy son. Don't be sad sweet heart mom really cares a lot. I know people can be cruel but not everyone is like that. There are a lots of nice people who love you. I do too & I hope everyone & every thing looks brighter to you. Life will be rewarding if you understand people & they understand you. You are a good child & I think you should not pay attention to trouble. Trouble will get you no where son. Stay out of trouble that is what the devil trys to get good boys in-is trouble. Show the old devil that God is your friend & don't fall for the wrong people. I'll show him because I believe in God. Because I'm your best friend & so is the Lord, he loves you honey very much & so do I. So Don't worry about mommie. She is fine now. Worry about your welfare. I mean that. I care about you & am concerned for you. Someday I'll see you & you will be a fine man.
So go to church. I am.
