NEED DIRECTIONS?
I am “vertically challenged” (that meaning I am 4’ 12”). I am “directionally challenged” as well. I need a compass, a map, a GPS, and some written directions from the person I am meeting or the place where I am going would be helpful also. I don’t know why directions have always been such an issue with me but it has been a challenge.
What about a good compass? Everyone who knows anything about a compass (which means even me) knows that North is the point to navigate from. Jesus is our True North – He is our North Star – our point from which to begin. Unless we follow Him we will end up at some destination we most likely do not want to be.
John 14:6 (NIV)
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
How about a map? Ever head out for places unknown without a good road map? Just take off and see where you end up? Not a good idea – unless you are just out exploring. Even then you need to find your way back. But if you really want to get to your destination you need a good map – and you need to chart your course. The Bible is our road map. God provided us with His Holy Word which gives us directions for life here on earth. It is also very clear in telling us our destination.
Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”
A GPS would be soooo nice – especially hearing a verbal command before each turn. Don’t you wish your spiritual life were so easy? You just turn on the GPS, put in your destination, and the Holy Spirit tells you to turn Right or Left and when to do so. In a sense that IS what the Holy Spirit does, not verbally but in our spirit – if we just tune in to God’s Perfect System.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
“ 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
So how is your compass, map reading, and GPS working out for you in your spiritual life? Are you directionally challenged as is this writer? Follow Jesus (our North Star), read the road map (the Bible), and follow God’s Plan for his Servant (by listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit).
James 1:5 (NIV)
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
Oh, and the part about getting written directions from your friends – If you need help seek the wisdom from spiritual leaders in your church, a counselor, or a friend.
REMEMBER:
G – Jesus is our Guide
P – Holy Spirit is our Power
S – God the Father is our Source
