Let's further think about this opening of Genesis 1:1. "In the beginning God". We see first of all some of the attibutes of God just by the opening statement of Genesis 1. God must be infinite for only an infinite God could create. Finite man cannot create. He can only put together things that are pre-exisiting. God is omnipotent, that is, He's all powerful.

Man who is derivative being is weak and incapable of creating anything and even the things that we create in our minds are combinations of ideas or people or pleaces or things.

An example would be a flying elephant.

Now that is just a combination of a bird and an elephant. You call it a flying elephant. Now think of an airplane that can fly. We call it a bird because flying is an attribute of most birds. To be truly orginal is very very difficult, if not impossible. Now God is original. He possesses original knowledge. Our knowledge is derivative of His knowledge or analogical of God's knowledge as Van Til would put it.

Consider that when man sinned darkness was on the face of the deep but the Spirit of God moved upon the creation and so there is a picture of salvation here where we see that the creation which was created perfect fell under the dominion of sin. This was after everything was pronounced good by God. Likewise, we have fallen under the dominion of sin as we come into this world having Adam's original sin imputed to us. It takes God's Spirit to move upon us or to be put within us so we become a new creation. We become part of His kingdom. John 3:3 This is our hope. God did not leave us without hope but in His great love to His creation He has made known the way of salvation, namely, through Jesus Christ His only begotten son. John 14:6
